Soft Brick vs Hard Bricked vs Broken Android Device

Posted on :

The basic thing to know if your phone isn’t booting any more is to find out whether your mobile is Hard Bricked, Soft Bricked or Broken. This post will help you differentiate between Soft Brick vs Hard Bricked vs Broken Android Device.

Soft Brick

Soft brick is the state of android device which occur due to some software problems like boot loops or phone freezing at some point during boot. This only occurs if some software problem occurred in the device mainly during OS upgrade or ROM flashing.

If your device is in such state then you are luck there are 99% chances that you can recover your beloved device without needing any professional help or spending hundred of dollars. Just search your device in this website, there must be a post for you, if not present, then you can request me and I will post a tutorial just for you.

Soft bricked device characterstics

  • Device stuck on vendor logo
  • Device stuck on boot animation
  • Device restarts automatically in an endless loop (bootloop)
  • Device can’t get into Recovery Mode
  • Device can only enter in Download Mode
  • Error while flashing new firmware

Hard Brick

Hard brick is the state of android device that occurs when your device won’t boot at all i.e. no boot loop, etc. This occurs due to trying to install ROM not made for your device or using ROM Manager incorrectly. This is more difficult to resolve and often require professional help.

During hard brick, the device’s kernel gets messed up, mainly due to incorrect ROM or kernel installation. (Kernel being the base which interact with the hardware). You can recover from hard brick by using JTAG or send your phone to JTAG service center to get it repaired.

Broken

Broken is a state of android device that occurs when any hardware component of device break down. This may occur due to electrical over charge, device dropped, water spilled etc. This require the electrical component being repaired or replace and does not occur due to any non supported software installation.

Hello my Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830 stuck on boot up screen. Please Help.

    • http://www.unbrick.itcse.com Rohan Kandwal

Please explain more. How you got stuck on bootloop? What have you tried till now and have you seen my post for unbricking Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830?

  • TONY

Hello, my android 2.0 tablet branded with ETISALAT NETWORK is not booting. Although i tried to hard reset it so that i will be able to use any network for it, I used QPST2.7.374 for backup a file named osf2.qcn and i also used OSF2 unlock software, in the process of doing restore it gave an error and i was trying to figure it out, i have to remove the tablet from the usb connected to my computer. Afterward, there is no communication between the tablet and the computer, each time i power the tablet on, it shows “CWM-base” and some color lines like yellow, green, blue, purple e.t.c on the screen. Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeee HELPPPPPPPPPPPPP

    • RohanKandwal

seems like that you have bricked your device. Does it enter in download mode? Also can you show a snapshot of what your device screen looks like? And from the future, request unbrick for a device using the unbrick request mentioned in the top menu.

      • TONY

Rohan, am very grateful for your concern, may Almighty God reward you. this is the picture of the android and the link that i got the article that i followed. its been working no until the last process ( http://sanfranciscoandroid.co.uk/android/unlock-orange-san-francisco-ii/restore-qcn-orange-san-francisco-ii/ ). please i will be glad if you can provide a solution for me.

        • RohanKandwal

You bricked your device. NEVER INTERRUPT FLASHING PROCESS ON YOUR OWN, NO MATTER WHAT. Now, tell me, can you enter in Recovery mode? Power on your device using “Volume down button and Power on button”. Can you see Clockwork Mod screen?

          • TONY

I CANT SEE CLOCKWORK MODE SCREEN. I interrupted the process because it was showing error in the process restore. I shouldn’t have interrupted? Whenever i pressed power and volume button, the pix i sent to you, is what shows up. Thanks for your kindly assistance.

          • RohanKandwal

try installing Clockwork Mod manually using their guide. Start from step 7. follow the guide http://sanfranciscoandroid.co.uk/android/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-the-orange-san-francisco-ii-zte-crescent/

          • TONY

The problem is that, after the damage has been done, my computer is unable to communicate with the android anymore. so i won’t be able to do any work with the android. before the damage occur, there’s no Clockwork Mod on the android.

          • RohanKandwal

On Windows PC, check your device manager after inserting your device in PC. Is it detecting your device there? may be under false name? or may be there is a yellow sign there. If so, then there is driver problem. Check out there posts http://www.modaco.com/topic/354267-solved-solution-osfii-is-bricked/ and http://www.modaco.com/topic/349128-how-to-rooting-unlocking-and-de-branding-your-zte-crescent-updated-now-complete/

          • TONY

Yea, when I checked device manager, i actually saw “ZTE Composite ADB interface” and I tried to manually install the ClockWork Mod. It actually worked the way it was in theier guide that “a command prompt will pop up and install and it will show success and my android will restart……. “Everything happened like that but when it came up, still in the same CWM-base screen with the multiple color lines.

This is the details of the android:
            model v9
            android version 2.2
            baseband version v9B01
            kernel version 2.6.32.9-perf
            build number FRY_ET_V9V1.0.0B01
            s/n 321211340803
            imei:355913040280252

Thank you once more. Am so sorry for the inconveniences

          • RohanKandwal

I removed your serial and imei number, you shouldn’t mention it in public (privacy n stuff). Anyhow, no inconveniences for me, I’m here to help. Seems like you device is refusing to enter in recovery mode through cwm.
Since you device is recognizable now 😀 ,we can try fastboot method. You need Android SDK installed however (search google). Follow this guide http://blog.podtwo.com/android/recovery/ClockworkMod%20Recovery%20for%20ZTE%20Blade2.html

just use fastboot commands and method instead of doing it through cwm or application.

          • TONY

Mr. Rohan, quite a while, i have been battling with my android tablet since, nothing good happened. i followed what you told me. this is the result of what i did so far:

Hi, sorry to reply you so late. It seems that unfortunately, your device require professional help now. You can search for JTAG service in your area and perhaps they can help you with recovering your device.

Hello, my phone is a Galaxy Ace Plus (Samsung) and it is rooted before and has a custom ROM. So it was state in bootloop already, I wiped already the cache and the dalvik cache but still the same.

I asked a group of Galaxy Ace Plus users in Facebook why it causes bootloop, and they said, it’s a common issue to SGAcePlus about the power button.

Then also, with the CWM Recovery it also reboots in there, as well as the download mode.

Now I tried to flash it with stock rom with ODIN. I was thinking that in order not to get reboot automatically again, I tried to rub as gently as I can so that it will not trigger to reboot again.

So, when I was flashing the stock rom, the phone reboots, and the ODIN stops at “recovery.img”. So now the Samsung logo is there when I turn it on (even turns on automatically when I put the battery). After few seconds, it reboots, and causes a reboot loop again!

I guess I don’t have the CWM recovery in that state. So I tried to put it in Download Mode again to flash it again. But, what happens is that the screen was gray for a second and it reboots.

I was surprised because before I tried to flash it with stock rom, I was already in bootloop but the vibration was just a like a normal vibrate usually on bootloops. But, when I am stuck right now with the Stock “Unfinished flashing” rom, when it reboot, so it’ll vibrate, yes. But the vibration is much longer than the usual one.

    Whatt too Doo??? help??? :(((

    • RohanKandwal

First of all sorry for late reply, I was having my M.Tech final year exams. Anyhow, let me get the facts right, you tried to flash the ROM but it stopped in midway and now you can’t get either into download or recovery mode. Is that correct?

      • FTB

Yes, and the Vendor logo is still there.

I asked in a FB Group “Ace Plus users”

They said that it is the power button itself causing the issue. And they said I have to fix it.

But, I was asking to myself about this, what if it is not the Power buttoni is the cause, what if it is in the software itself.

        • RohanKandwal

I own Galaxy Ace S5830 myself but have never seen any such problem. May be the problem is only with Ace plus. If many users are reporting it then it might be true. You can query customer service about if this is true, if so, then you won’t have any choice other than pay for repairs.

    Hi,
I have Samsung Galaxy S3 i747. Few days back my phones was dropped from my hand. now nothing is displaying on my phone. However i am not seeing any cracks on screen and if someone call on my phone i am able to pick by sliding finger on it and can speak. But it is not showing any visible screen. It just remains black. Please suggest what happen to my device.

    • RohanKandwal

There might be two reasons- Firstly, your display cable has gone loose or you broke your display. In either condition, you need some professional help.

    hi

    i have a samsung galaxy 10.1 n8000..

i updated it from android jelly bean to android kitkat..

using kitkat playing some videos and suddenly my device restarted..

and it begin to boot loop..

    any suggestion?

i tried to visit samsung service center and they say that the main board of my device has been broken..

    • RohanKandwal

More likely you have a bricked device. I have made a post for how to unbrick Samsung Galaxy 10.1 n8000, have you read it?

      • mscinnamon10

Hi Rohan, I wish I have read your advice before giving away my tablet for service. It’s samsung gtn8000 bricked after a month of downloading kit kat ota. I was able to get it on to Downloading mode..and no options to choose but I didn’t know what to do after that. When I phoned samsung, they told I gotta give it to their service center for inspection since there wasn’t any options to choose. That guy didn’t tell me to connect to my pc to flash. I paid rs.6700 for motherboard replacement which I don’t know if dey have really done it. Please tell me how to check if they have done so. I doubt it coz d one which they said it’s a old one bears p7500 on it(motherboard). Is it possible to get a gtn8000 with p7500 motherboard? Please reply to mscinnamon10@rediffmai.com and here as well. So others could it as well. Thanks in advance.

        • RohanKandwal

If samsung have replaced board then it is nearly impossible to know it since Samsung port old IMEI to the new devices. But since it is your phone you might notice some familiar fading on the sticker of motherboard.

And some FYI, many times service center people don’t even try to unbrick your device, their solution is “Change the motherboard”, since they don’t know much. I once talked to a care’s technician and asked him to reflash my partitions using a ops file and he was like “What !!!” 😉

Also most of the companies PC or mobile don’t give you a brand new motherboard (not everytime), usually its a refurbished.

For your last question, it should work “Compatible since similar hardware”.

    • mscinnamon10

I too faced d same problem n replaced d motherboard. It’s working fine. Have u tried what Rohan has said here.

  • Hazim Amsyar

Hi. I’m having some problems with my sprint sgs3 (sph-L710). I had cm10.1 and tried to flash clean bean 4.2. Hi. I have a Zeki quad core tablet that appears to be soft bricked based on your info. I sure would like to find a possible solution to recover it. I have a Samsung Galaxy Mega i527 (AT&T) and for some reason after I installed the new screen it would just go into a continuous boot loop, but if I connect the old screen and turn the phone on, and reconnect the old screen it will work. I just cant turn it off. Is it something wrong with the screen, the phone, or is it just needing a soft reset?

    • RohanKandwal

This is a problem with the screen, which version you are on?

  • Tanumay Pal

My gionee m2 Device stuck on boot animation. What i do?? after restart the phone its only showing the gionee logo and its animation nothing else.what is the problem???Plz help me…

    • RohanKandwal

How did it got stuck? Try clearing caches and if you have a backup of your internal memory then do a factory reset (this will erase your internal memory). This should help you get your device back if there isn’t any serious problem. Report back how it went.

  • Daniel Medina

Hello,i read the other day that very few devices are really irreparable,I am working with android devices ,I’m not very good at this but could you give me an example of when an android device could really be irreparable ,how could I leave the smartphone purposely useless without being reparable ,hope you can help me ,thank you anyway

    • RohanKandwal

For one thing, throw your device on the floor that will make it irreparable 😛 . Jokes apart, doing anything that messes up your internal partition horribly might make it as useful as a paperweight. eg- installing a ROM not made for your device, overwriting your internal partitions, flashing wrong kernel or bootloader, etc. A device becomes irreparable when it is messed up to such a extent that it’s impossible to make it detected by any software or hardware and only JTAG repairing option remains (not always).

      Need more explanation? Reply back.

Hi Rohan, I have a Micromax Unite 2 A106. I tried to root the phone by following a video guide. The phone, after successful rooting, had CWM custom rom. My main intention was to increase the storage space allocated for apps. I followed another video guide and tried to do it. But, at the end of the process, my phone displayed a message saying – “damaged internal sd card”. The solution for this was also given in the same video. According to the video, I had to wipe cahe partition and delvik cache and factory reset the phone. Upon doing it, my phone was stuck in the manufacturer’s logo. When I booted it to recovery mode, it displayed a message – “cant clear cache”. When I googled for a solution for this issue, a few websites said that I have to flash the stock rom. I did the same by following the instructions. Now when i disconnected the phone from my laptop and tried to turn it on, it did not respond. Even when i connected the charger, the led did not light up.
Is my phone hard bricked? Can I recover it? Or is it irrepairable?

    • RohanKandwal

If your device doesn’t show any life even when your charger is plugged in then it’s hard bricked, sorry to say that. Only option now left is JTAG or motherboard replacement.

      • Vijaya Raghavan R

Yes, its just one month old. Will the motherboard be replaced for free of cost? If not, do u have any idea about how much it may cos

        • RohanKandwal

The motherboard will probably cost around 60-70% of your device’s cost. Don’t tell the customer care people that you have tried anything on it, just pretend that it happened on its own.

          • Vijaya Raghavan R

Thank you for spending your time to reply.
Can u give me some suggestions about what to tell the service center people? Something that is quite credible.

          • RohanKandwal

Although it’s your own fault you bricked your device (you messed up while following tutorials), you can simply say it stopped working, it was fine hour ago when you used it and don’t know what happened. Just tell them you did nothing and it died on its own.

          • Vijaya Raghavan R

Thank you so much, Sir. I will get back to you if I have any issue.

  • YG2000

Hi, I tried to change the internal memory partition on my Starmobile Up, but unfortunately, it didn’t work and I’m stuck at the boot logo. Is it easy to recover?

    • RohanKandwal

It depends on how bad you messed up, did you tried clearing caches and wiping data partition?

  • Jess

my Samsung Galaxy Win/Quattro is stuck in Recovery Mode. Tried wiping partiton, dalvik cache and factory reset. It says “Status 7”. What to do?

  • Brandon Nolan

Hello, I attempted to update my firmware, but midway through download my USB became disconnected and my galaxy s3 is now permanently stuck on the download screen. I have taken the battery out and back in but it continues to go to the download screen and nothing more. Is this a soft or hard brick? And how can I correct this problem?

    • RohanKandwal

This appears to be a soft brick. I have written post for different variants of Samsung Galaxy S3, please search my site. If you face further problem please reply on the appropriate tutorial page.

Also what is Odin’s log? Have you tried clearing caches after installing ROM?

Please reply on your device’s page only.

I have got a samsung galaxy ace gt-s5830i and while i was playing highway ride the phone just closed and then tried to open it up and i found my self stuck at the model logo saying (Samsung GALAXY GT-S5830i) so i have wiped data via cwm with no luck… i tried to recover an old working nandroid backup i’ve made long time ago

it has restored the backup but while the process it says (restoring /data…) then (can’t mount /data) (skipping format) and done.. so i tried to reboot after that

it has showed that animated boot logo of the backed up rom but that animation keeps running again over and over…

i thought maybe thats because the /data isn’t mounted… formatted the sdcard (it is partitioned) with no luck… cant mount /data

i’ve sent it some where to do it via odin but looks like he didnt do anything… so im stuck

is it hard bricked or just soft? thanks in advance..

    • RohanKandwal

It’s a soft brick, just partition your device along with PIT file for your device.
P.S. I already have a post for S5830i, please comment there as it will be helpful for others.

Hello! Can someone help me get my LG Ally to boot into recovery or flash a ROM? Its soft-bricked. The LG Ally wont reboot into recovery. If I could get it fixed soon that would be very nice. Thanks!

  • Haze

I have an android phone (Advan S5F, OS Jelly Bean).
For the pass one week, it has been difficultly to charge the battery.
Even though it charges, sometimes it won’t charge but light shows charging (either power on or off).
The battery also finished very fast (around 4 hours).
I tried to calibrate and repair battery but still not good result yet.
Sometimes it charges, but very slow around 12 hours (not all the time fully charged and charged power off).
It always charges very slow, but when reach 85%, it will turn 100% charged in one minute.

I bought a new battery (not original) but same specification, hopefully the problem is with the battery.
But still the same thing happen to the new battery.
I even try to use different charger, but still charge very slowly.

    Can anyone help me?

    • RohanKandwal

This appears to be a hardware problem. You may have a faulty connector. I would advice you to take your mobile to a authorized center.

If you have a friend with a phone that takes a memory card, you could always try downloading your firmware for your device and save it on the memory card in friends phone, then safe remove it and put in your phone, boot into recovery and flash firmware from the card in your phone. Should work as I have had to do it with my Tab 3 and my S5.

Hey, I have GTN-8000 and got soft bricked and I didnt’t know what caused it, it started to loop with the brand, I’m on Kitkat. Can I follow the instructions to unbrick it from your thread in this link? http://unbrick.itcse.com/unbrick-soft-bricked-samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-gt-n8000-gt-n8010-and-gt-n8013/

    • RohanKandwal

Hi, yes you can use the tutorial. Just make sure that you are downloading files and firmwares for your device model only.

I kinda dropped my moto g xt1033 and it worked for a few days and stopped working one day. There was a charging problem that i ignored. I kept the phone for quite a long while until i gave it to a nearby shop. The shopkeeper told me that the connecter had been discharged from the board and he fixed it. But my phone still wont boot. I tried flashing the stock rom but it does’nt work. The bootloader is unlocked and the phone keeps on looping the “warning bootloader unlocked” shit.. its driving me crazy. What do you think the problem is?… Please help…. :'(

Hi, my Samsung Galaxy has been in bootloop since quite a while. I used KOT49H.N5100XXDNH3 to root on Samsung Official Stock ROM (India). I tried re-flashing using stock rom but still same issue. Please please please help.

    • Akshay Chandra

I missed to mention complete model. It is Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 GT-N5100.

Rohan, I thank you so much for this awesome post. Though you might not have got the chance to reply me, however, after reading the reasons that you mentioned of SOFT BRICK again and again, I thought of flashing it with stock ROM “N5100XXDNH3_N5100OJVDNH3_FWD” instead of the original “N5100DDCMI2_N5100ODDCMI2_INU” and….. IT WORKED. Thanks a lot again. I am so happy to get my Note back :)

Hello people, just wondering if anybody can help or know how to help solve a problem with my Tab 3(sm-t315)…? I am trying to re-install cm12.1 as it works great on lollipop. But I flashed a incorrect file (param-samsung-t315.tar.md5), it was for a (sm-t311)… I can still flash stock firmware but has a data glitch that takes a little bit for it recognise my sim. And the only version of cm12.1 I can get to work is (cm-12.1-20150609) which will not recognise my sim at all? As I beleive the sm-t311 version is wifi only. I am using philz touch 6.12.8-lt01lte but when I try using twrp it says my device is a “tab8wifi”? I could just stay on stock Kitkat 4.4.2 but realy want to go back to lollipop… Any help would be great, I can do most other stuff myself but am still learning.

hi .my panasonic p55 novo has been soft bricked.what can i do

    • Mathew Smart

I would get a stable for update the model you have, wipe dalvik, wipe cache, factory reset, clear for a new ROM, Flash new ROM, Flash matching Gapps 4.4.4/5.1.1, reboot.
If there is still a boot loop, clear cache again after flashing.

HI. I have an issue with two BLU Studio 5.5c phones that I am at my wits end trying to solve. These are relatively newer devices and there isn’t much out there as far as support or ROM downloads. These phones are soft bricked and a friend of mine gave me the challenge of fixing them. A challenge indeed…..ADB will not recognize the device although windows does. I have looked all over the place and have tried different ways. One of which was SP Flash Tool. The downloads of this software seem to have a Trojan embedded in them. I have downloaded Android Studio which has Android SDK in it but can’t figure out how to diagnose the phone with it? Android Studio I think is mainly to create apps. Why is it that if it has diagnostic tools in it I can’t figure out how to use them? The version of ADB I have is Minimal ADB and Fastboot. The problem is that I can’t find a ROM to Flash to device using sideload. Also whatever he did to these phones there is no recovery…..I can boot into recovery where I have cleared user data and caches and it won’t reboot. It seems as though perhaps something he did was try to install a ROM without clearing the davilik cache on the stock ROM….therefore soft brick. Like I said there isn’t much out there in information on BLU…….what would you do? If you could help me it would give me some peace of mind….lol

I’ve android PumpKinx 10.1 tablet(http://americanpumpkins.com/10-inch-android-lollipop-tablet/) with 5.1 Lollipop android os.

I did take backup of its stock recovery image.

Since there is no custom recovery image for this device I tried to flash it with twrp recovery image. But after running below command, device goes into bootloop. I’ve tried many methods but no success.

    fastboot flash:raw boot twrp.img

Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have a LG G STYLO with Metro PCS Lollipop 5.1.1. I have soft bricked it. Need help I am not too savvy or as savvy as id like to be. Any help would be great.
I tried to root with one click lg root software… it was a success, rebooted 2 times but never made it past the bootloader (LG screen) the third time. I’m not sure if I was supposed to wait a long time and eventually it would turn on but after 20 minutes I removed the battery and tried to reboot again. Stuck on boot loader.
